Hi John, :hi:
My ring mandrel I use is made of steel.
One side of my bench vise teeth has a notch in it, this way I can clamp it into the vise.
This allows me to use both hands while tapping the ring with the brass & steel hammers.

Here's a picture of the steel mandrel and the hammers I use.
